As the holiday season nears, many travelers have already started their hunt for cheap airfare. Although travel experts and analysts believe that a fare hike is inevitable as airlines take advantage of the huge crowd, the availability of discounted tickets cannot be denied.

Obviously, the problem that budget-conscious travelers will encounter is finding these inexpensive airline tickets. Some have the patience to scour the internet and compare prices while there are those who prefer working with their travel agents.

There are several advantages to employing the services of a travel agency. For starters, you need not be the one to do the shopping and comparing. You can simply state your travel budget and let the agents do their magic in finding cheap airfare.

In addition, travel agencies can also help you grab deals that include hotel accommodation and even land transfers. You will no longer need to take care of such details which could be quite stressful for some. It is also a known fact that agencies partner with airlines and hotels which could mean considerable savings for you.

Since travel is their business, you can expect these agencies to know a trick or two when it comes to hunting for good deals.

If you want, you can also consider the services of tour operators. Just like travel agencies, they could easily help you look for a deal that fits your budget and preferences. You might be surprised with how some of these operators are able to book your flights on airlines which have already sold out.

Of course, there is that extra cost you have to pay for getting such services. You may want to have a flexible travel plan in order to find really great holiday deals.

Working with a travel agency or tour operator is indeed a good idea especially if you are too busy to look for cheap airfare or have no idea how and where to begin.

At the end of the day, the important thing is that your travel plans for the holidays will push through.

Many of those who travel think of airports as plain hubs where they either need to hustle through or endure. But if you actually look around, you will see that there are a lot of things you could do in an airport.

You can enjoy free internet service, or local specialties and sceneries, or day spas, or art waiting to be appreciated. You just have to look around.

San Francisco, Philadelphia and Atlanta airports have different artistic offerings like a library, a museum of history, arts and even aviation.

If working-out is more of your thing, airport hotels like Hilton in Chicago and Boston, and Westin in Detroit have day-passes for their gym and spa.

Departure spas and massage bars are gaining popularity in many airdromes. One is XpresSpa which offers various massages, facials and even waxing in 30 terminals across the country. This, you can say is what pre-travel relaxation is all about!

And if you get hungry, there are lots of restaurants, particularly those that offer local favorites. Try grabbing a bite before you leave for travel.

And if shopping for chic fashion is your hobby, luxurious boutiques like Bulgari, Cartier, Hermes and Swarovski can be just within the airstrip. Museum gift shops can also offer distinctive travel souvenirs.

For wine and beer lovers, there are some bars, bistros and pubs within the airports too.

But if you are the more of a quiet type, visit airline lounges that offer internet, drinks, business services and even back rubs. There are also private cubicles by Regus Express in a lot of airports where you can enjoy a catnap.

Many airports like Denver, Orlando, Las Vegas and Pittsburg have free Wi-fi. This is perfect for those who travel with their laptops— just find a comfortable spot and you are ready to go surfing.

Then, there are these airports like Charlotte Douglas International where they make their travelers feel like they are home. They have those oak rocking chairs to make the travel waiting time more soothing.

So next time you travel, do not just rush trough the airport. There are lots of things in the airport that you can enjoy.

Travel to RV parks brings you closer to nature. But if you feel that you are not yet close enough, the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds are making sure you can be as close as it gets. They are encouraging RV parks to find ways in conserving water and energy through the “Plan it Green” project.

The 2-year old project has convinced a lot of travel destinations to capitalize on water and energy conserving investments. Here are some of them:

Clay’s Park Resort in Hopkins Township, Michigan has installed solar panels to heat up the indoor pool that will also be using the saline sanitation system. The heating system is also down to a wood burning stove.

Sandy Pines in southwestern Michigan will also heat up their pools with solar panels and will be consuming geothermal energy to heat and cool some of its facilities. They will also give up chlorine and use saline in their pools.

Last year’s winner of exemplary green practices, Grand Haven Resort has been using geothermal heating and cooling systems for a while.

Cooperstown Beaver Valley Cabins and Campsites have resorted in recycling, conservation and composting. Recycled fences and decks, manure instead of chemical fertilizers and fluorescent light bulbs. Reservations are confirmed only by e-mail to save paper and time.

Solar panels may cost $32,000 and the geothermal system is around $72,000, but the long term cost saving will be immense. Energy costs can even go down by 90 percent.

Saline system conversion may mean $7,800 but if you think about how much cheaper and safer salt is, it would be worth it. Salt-water system produces safer chlorine gas with almost similar sanitizing effect without the strong smell.

Travel destinations like RV parks are showing more initiatives not only to save energy by using efficient installments, but also to keep their consumers happy. RV associations found out that consumers love to travel to environmentally friendly destinations.

Hopefully, more travel destinations will see the beauty of going green. It is not only environmental and consumer friendly, but also good investments that can give back more in the future.

During the Fourth of July Weekend, Walt Disney World unveiled a new attraction that will definitely increase travel to visit Orlando, Florida. President Barack Obama joined the other 42 U.S. presidents in the refurbished Hall of Presidents.

With the state of the art audio-animatronic figure, you can actually listen to some of the inspiring speeches of the current President.

A group of artists, designers and engineers collectively known as “Imagineers” was tasked to update the historical attraction that has been in Disney World since 1971. They had to use their skill and magic to gather these presidents in a single stage.

Their latest creation, President Obama, is the most dynamic among their features in the Hall. The advancement in technology has helped them create a very realistic audio-animatronic Obama.

The “Imagineers” had to travel to Washington D.C. to record the President’s voice for the new installment. They even worked with the White House staff to make sure that they get the President’s hair, wardrobe and mannerisms accurately.

Sculptor Valerie Edwards had to watch as much videos and pictures to get every muscle on Obama’s face replicated. Well, the hard work paid off.

The newly renamed “Hall of the President: A Celebration of Liberty’s Leaders” wants to capture the presidents’ bond with its people.

Doris Keans Goodwin, the presidential historian, is glad that people would still travel to see this show and experience a little closeness to their presidents. Hopefully, by listening to their inspiring speeches, they will give hope and confidence that America can survive whatever struggle it encounters.

The updated Hall of Presidents also includes Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. It has been visited for 40 years, but Disney World continues to update this attraction to keep it relevant for the new set of people who travel to see it.

Disney is also taking advantage of the technological advances to make the attraction more spectacular and worth the travel.

Fulfilling your fantasy to travel in a far away land may be difficult if the plane ticket alone can cost you most of your funds. But there are some tried and tested tactics you can consider to avail of cheaper tickets:

Try using fare-history charts.

With a few clicks of your mouse you can find the trend of ticket prices to your travel destination. This will help you decide whether you should purchase the ticket now or there is a bigger chance for a deal if you wait a little later.

You could also monitor ticket prices

With the availability of online fare-tracking services, you can know daily ticket price changes. These services will send you regular e-mail updates, especially when the ticket price borders your target travel rate. You can use the fare-history chart’s lowest possible plane fare as you baseline.

Try a flexible date search

You can save a lot of your funds if you first try a flexible date search tool. You can avoid paying extra fees for frequent arrival or departure re-scheduling and cancellation. Be sure that the tool covers the widest travel destinations and airports.

It is smarter to buy 2 tickets

By allowing your international travel to have some pit stops with separate tickets for each stop, you can save a couple hundred of dollars. Take this travel itinerary as an example: Direct flight to and from Chicago and Barcelona costs $1000; while a round trip ticket for Chicago-New York is only $200 and $600 for round trip New York-Barcelona. That is a total travel saving of $200.

To find the best connecting flights, you must first know the hub airport for your destination. If you are about to travel to South America, you must know that Miami is the hub to be. For trips to Asia, Australia and the South Pacific you might want to connect through LAX, or Los Angeles’ airport. Airports in New York City are the hub for cross-Atlantic and European travel.
But if you are considering tickets from different air companies, you must allot some allowance for you to make your connecting flight. Also, avail travel insurance to take care of you incase any mishap happens.

Try scheduling off-season travel

Consult guidebooks that will show the peak, low and shoulder season of your travel destination. And if you pick the cheaper fare of off-season travel, check on the weather trend and itinerary fees. You would not want thunderstorms ruin your trip.

Considering the sluggish economy, it is not surprising that travel agencies and rental companies are experiencing some financial difficulties, particularly due to lack of customers. Still, this should not be a reason for them not to meet their financial obligations and let one of their customers suffer through the indignity of being harassed by a collection agency just because that happen to drive a rental car with an expired registration.

If this unfortunate situation has caused such inconvenience on the part of the traveler, consider the following:

Be aware of your rights
If you know that it is really not your debt, know that you should not pay. But if the collection agency still insists that you owe them, you can ask for legal advice and open up a case against the travel company. And only two things may happen: you will repay the amount that you owe or the creditor will be prohibited to attempt to gather any amount from you.

You must understand the process
Collection agencies can not simply show up and start asking you for money. They have a process to follow. First, they must inform you about the problem through the phone. Then based on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, they must follow you up with a letter of notification within the next 5 days. You then need to respond within 30 days. If after you attest that it is not your debt but the travel company’s and still the collector is bugging you, you can ask for the aid of a consumer lawyer.

Know the possibilities
Most collecting agencies say that debts amounting to $1000 are their cut off. But they have some considerations like the balance, the age and type of the debt, how old the account is and the number of accounts the client has.

Know how to discuss the terms
Collecting agencies can be accommodating if you know how to talk to them. They will usually offer a payment plan: where each of your payment will appear in the credit report until there is no balance. Some companies will allow you to pay part of the debt.

Know that there are people who can help
If a collection agency accuses you of owing some amount, and you know to yourself that it was not your fault, talk to your travel agent and ask them to back you up. This can save you from paying an amount you do not owe.

A recent survey reveals that a third of the American families will travel with company this year to conserve their limited budget. This is far more than 2008’s results.

May it be travel with relatives or friends; vacationing with another group whom you can split your expenses with, is good. Cabins in a resort in Maine that can accommodate nine people only costs $195. The same goes in Hawaii where more reservations are made for split condos than individual rooms. Renting bigger spaces then splitting up the costs is cheaper than renting separate rooms in a hotel.

Come to think about it, you can definitely save when you divide travel costs with another family. 66 percent of rental owners are putting up great deals to encourage travel in their areas. From free night stay to cleaning services, concessions and tickets to local sites.

With all these savings, who would not want to travel with a company?

What makes it better is that you can catch up how your family friends or cousins, aunts and uncles have been doing. It becomes more relaxing for parents to enjoy a trip with other adults to tag along. With their kids busy spending fun time with other kids, moms and dads also have bonding (drinks and laughs) with other parents. Your travel becomes not only a vacation to entertain the kids, but also an unwinding occasion for the parents.

What appears to be the hardest part of traveling with another family is the planning stage particularly setting the date. Of course before you travel, you must take care of the rental, whether there is enough room for everyone to sleep in and play at. Having a pool may be better too.

Also, make sure that you know how to divide the expenses. You can assign a day for each family to take care of the food, cleaning up, etc. You can also divide costs based on the occupied room, or to make it simpler, divide it equally among the families.

But remember what is most important in every travel is pleasure. When the kids enjoy, the parents can have fun too. The difference is when you are in a big group, you spend a little less, yet you are having as much fun.

AAA expects 37.1 million vacationers that will travel more than 50 miles away from their home this July 4, still 1.9 percent lower than last year.

Gas price may have slightly increased again, but the rise halted this Monday. Gasoline prices are only $2.68, down from last year’s $4, many are still thinking about taking a well deserved vacation this incoming holiday weekend.

This may be due to the 9.4 percent unemployment rate that is even expected to reach 10 percent very soon. American net worth even fell a whopping $1.3 billion during the first 3 months of 2009. Many homes would not want to risk spending extra money for leisure if their source of income is not that stable. They would rather enjoy some quiet time at home.

Even with the slight decline, travel is not as worse as last year when there was a 10.5 percent fall. AAA even says that majority of this year’s vacationers were those who suppressed themselves to travel last year.

Travel may be gaining back its momentum while households try to regain their spending routine.

AAA forecasts that 88 percent of the travels this year, or 32.6 million trippers, will go by car. This is 2.6 percent lower than last year. But the decline may be attributed to more reasonable plane ticket prices that the 2 million travelers availed. Air travel is even expected to increase by 2.9 percent.

AAA then surveyed 2,700 homes and found out that travel per household costs $1,160. 50 percent of this budget may go to transport and accommodations, while 20 percent goes to food and drinks. The rest may be allotted for leisure, shopping and entertainment.

Encourage your kids to go camping and you will have a different kind of experience. It may be not as comfortable as saying in a hotel, but the travel adventures that the outdoors can bring are irreplaceable.

Make sure to include your kids in planning the trip. To make the travel more enjoyable for youngsters, bring foods that are usually not allowed at home— candies, chocolate, and other sugar-rich, fatty goods.

It is also a good idea to travel with another family with children with the same age of yours. You can also ask your teen to tag along a friend.

To feel the outdoors more, keep the electronics away. This will also allow more quality time with your kids. Without their gadgets, they can entertain themselves with what nature can offer.

This year, more families seem to appreciate travel to camping sites. Campsite reservations and camping gear sales are up by 30 percent of last year. This may be because you can enjoy a night in a campsite for only $20.

The National Park Service would want to encourage outdoor travel by offering camping activities and free-entrance weekends on July 16-19 and August 15-16.

A camping trip does not need a lot to be entertaining. You can rent the necessary camping gears from companies like Eastern Mountain Sports or REI. For those who are not that into sleeping on the damp ground, there are pop-up campers and RV rentals at $35/day.

Planning activities may not be necessary either. Many camping clubs can organize the entire camping trip for you filled with outdoor activities and guided tours.

Efforts to encourage outdoor travel are available everywhere. REI stores have adventure journals that contain activities, sticker, games and more. The government even created The Office of Youth in Natural Resources that will coordinate youth initiatives.

Campgrounds nowadays have enough entertainment for your family— activities, pools, staffs and even your campsite neighbor.

But you must always ensure safety, especially your kids’. Kids can get lost easily so make sure that there is an adult that looks after the young ones. When hiking, hand each kid with a whistle, instruct them to have a buddy, always follow the trail, and in case they get lost—hug a tree while waiting to be found.

Your travel outdoor may be unpredictable — bugs, rain, injuries and stuff, but this experience with nature will be something your kids may remember for a long time.

Verify Identity Pass promised frequent fliers that they can bypass the trouble of security checkpoints if they avail a membership. This service has saved many of its customer’s security screening time and the difficulty of long lines and that is why many were upset when it shut down recently. Travel will become stressful for them again.

What is worse is the $178 to $199 annual fee may not be refunded at all.

The company says that the abrupt stop of operations is due to unsettlement with their creditors. Some of the members were pre-warned through e-mails, but may learn about the closure at the airport already.

Many frequent fliers were dismayed, especially those who travel for business. They say that the extra fees were worth it because they have saved time and stress from them.

The company was founded in 2003 by Steven Brill based on the TSA’s Registered Traveler, aimed to decrease the tough security lines after the 9-11 incident. But TSA denied any relation.

Besides losing the privilege, many members are worried about the personal information they released to get the membership card—information like iris scans, fingerprints and other personal qualities. They are afraid that these may get into the wrong hands and put it on sale.

The company promises that the personal information will be kept based on TSA standards and will be deleting accordingly.

Meanwhile, the Air Transport Association emphasizes that they cannot see the benefit these travel services offer. They say that TSA also provides this service without any charge, besides, not all air companies have long lines and also offer some special deals for those who travel frequently.

But many frequent fliers that this travel privilege has helped them a lot: saved time and hassle-free processing. Some hope that another company will offer the service and bring back the hassle-free travel they are willing to pay for.
